Zika virus arrives in the West Indies

The first two cases of people infected with the Zika virus have been confirmed in Martinique and Guyana, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health announced last Saturday in a press release. Health authorities recommend that people protect themselves from mosquito bites.

The health agency (ARS) Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy declared the same day that the health watch and vector control services have been on alert for four months. This virus is transmitted by the same mosquito as that responsible for dengue and chikungunya (Aedes aegypti), adds the ARS, stressing that pregnant women, from the beginning of pregnancy, must be particularly vigilant. Symptoms are flu-like with rashes, reports the Department of Health. As a reminder, during the last steering committee for the local health contract (CLS), Patrice Richard, the director general of ARS Guadeloupe / Iles du Nord, presented the different objectives of this plan, including reducing the incidence vector-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya and zika.
