Cyclonic season (2/2): Preparations for the approach of meteorological phenomena

0

The prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin as well as the Collectivity of Saint-Martin call on the population to be better prepared in the event of weather events. In our Monday edition, we had to pay special attention to cleaning the island and picking up bulky items to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles. This second part is devoted to the conduct to be followed, evacuation instructions, shelters, but also to the composition of an emergency kit.

• The constitution of the emergency kit:

The emergency kit must be ready in all circumstances and not just for the hurricane season. In an emergency situation, the running water, electricity and telephone networks can be cut. You must be prepared to live independently for a few days with certain essential items, at your home (confinement) or outside after an evacuation order. Be careful that the bag is not overloaded, you may have to walk with it. Gather essential items and items to deal with an emergency situation and place them in an easily accessible place:

- Water: at least ten liters per person,

- Basic tools: multifunction pocket knife, can opener ...,

- Emergency food consuming little water: energy bars, dried fruits, preserves, baby food, etc.,

- Flashlight with two sets of spare batteries or a lamp without crank battery (dynamo),

- Radio with batteries or batteries, or a radio without crank battery,

- Medical first aid kit: strips, alcohol, adhesive plaster, paracetamol, anti-diarrhea, hydroalcoholic products for the hands, etc. as well as your current treatment medications,

- A duplicate of the house keys to avoid having to look for them and risk leaving the door open or being blocked outside afterwards,

- A duplicate of the car keys to avoid looking for them, or forgetting them and losing time in the event of evacuation by road,

- Your identity papers as well as a photocopy of your identity papers,

- A mobile phone with charged battery and USB cable,

- Cash or credit card,

- Spare clothes and shoes,

- Toilet paper and a personal hygiene essential,

- A sleeping bag,

- Various games: cards, dice, dominoes, etc. If the situation were to last, it would pass the time,

- A plastic bag to protect valuables and important papers.

• Pipes to follow, evacuation instructions and shelters

The guidelines to be followed relating to alert levels can be viewed in the Prefecture and the Collectivity as well as on their respective websites (www.saint-barth-saint-martin.pref.gouv.fr and www.com-saint- martin.fr).

During this hurricane season, 7 shelters with a capacity of 1500 places are fairly distributed across the territory.

The Prefecture and the Community jointly wish to remind the population to find out about the shelter closest to their home and to respect this choice of proximity to limit the risks of under-capacity of certain shelters in the event of a crisis.

In the event of a cyclone approach, at the announcement of RED alert, join your home or the shelter closest to you.

The Prefect and the President remain mobilized and insist on the necessary involvement of all, throughout this season. These individual actions are the guarantors of our security.
