Cyclone season 2018: It's time to prepare!

0

With the approach of the next hurricane season, the Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin and the Collectivity of Saint-Martin remind everyone of the need for everyone's commitment to preparing the island.

The subjects relating to individual and collective preparation are on the agenda, namely:

 Cleaning the island:

Individuals, associations, hoteliers, syndicates of condominiums and professionals are invited to pick up their bulky items and clean the surroundings of their premises, construction sites and homes. Civic spirit and the sense of responsibility of all those involved in the implementation of this cleanup are called upon. Any object not picked up becomes a projectile in the event of a cyclonic episode. The safety of all of us is at stake.

The Collectivity contributes to this action as part of the cleaning ego (May 10 to June 10):

- Dumpsters are available to you at several points in the territory. It is therefore time to start pruning, decluttering your properties and evacuating your green waste, debris and bulky items, which can be dangerous in the event of strong winds.

- In order to allow you to evacuate all this waste, it is possible to access the Grande Cayes ecosite free of charge (only for vehicles registered on the French side and for trucks equipped with a dump body). It is also possible for individuals to drop off your waste free of charge at the Galisbay recycling center.

Individuals and businesses who will join this effort are asked to sort green waste, sheets and pieces of wood, before transporting them to the Grandes Cayes ecosite. This preliminary sorting is important, because it will facilitate the treatment of waste by the VERDE company and the Galisbay recycling center.

• Habitat preparation:

It is important to carry out, as far as possible, the reinforcement of your habitat and useful verifications of the structures of this latter:

- Consolidate the house at the level of its exits (doors, windows),

- Check your protection devices such as cyclonic shutters in the absence of which provide protection in pieces of plywood to be fixed on a wooden frame,

- Check and tighten the fixings of your roof (one screw at least every 50 centimeters),

- Ensure proper maintenance of the rainwater drainage system (channels, gutters),

- If you live in a flood zone, be sure to prepare a system that will reduce the penetration of water into your home (metal plates, sandbags, etc.),

- Define a "safe room", a safe room, without window or door leading to the outside,

- Organize your evacuation if necessary. Choose the home of a friend or family member and tell them about it now,

- Check your insurance (home, car).

The list of shelters will be communicated at the joint press conference scheduled for June XNUMX, the start of the hurricane season.

• The constitution of the Emergency Kit:

The emergency kit must be ready in all circumstances and not just for the hurricane season. In an emergency, the running water, electricity and telephone networks can be cut.

• You must be ready to live independently for a few days with certain essential items, in your home (containment) or outside after an evacuation order. Be careful that the bag is not overloaded, you may have to walk with it.

Gather essential items and items to deal with an emergency and place them in an easily accessible location:

- Water: at least ten liters per person,

- Basic tools: multifunction pocket knife, can opener ...,

- Emergency food that consumes little water: energy bars, dried fruits, preserves, baby food, etc.,

- Flashlight with two sets of spare batteries or a lamp without crank battery (dynamo),

- Radio with batteries or batteries, or a radio without crank battery,

- Medical first aid kit: strips, alcohol, adhesive plaster, paracetamol, anti-diarrhea, hydroalcoholic products for the hands, etc. as well as your current treatment medications,

- A duplicate of the house keys to avoid having to look for them and risk leaving the door open or being blocked outside afterwards,

- A duplicate of the car keys to avoid looking for them, or forgetting them and losing time in the event of evacuation by road,

- Your identity papers as well as a photocopy of your identity papers,

- A mobile phone with charged battery and USB cable,

- Cash or credit card,

- Spare clothes and shoes,

- Toilet paper and a personal hygiene essential,

- A sleeping bag

- Various games: cards, dice, dominoes, etc. If the situation were to last, it would pass the time,

- A plastic bag to protect valuables and important papers.

A flyer will be distributed in the form of a "check list" to facilitate your preparation and the constitution of this kit. The media, which play a major role in disseminating information, are invited to relay it.

The Prefect and the President remain mobilized and insist on the necessary involvement of all. These individual actions are the guarantors of our security.
