Hurricane Dorian: The united spirit towards the Bahamas does not take off!

French associations each launched a call for donations to help the tens of thousands of survivors of the storm in the Bahamas. But they seem to be struggling to raise a lot of funds.

The Bahamas, ravaged last Sunday by Hurricane Dorian, has since lived in landscapes of great desolation. Hundreds of houses have been flooded, submerged by rising sea levels, or flattened by the wind. According to a provisional assessment, at least 20 inhabitants have lost their lives. And the UN estimates that more than 70 people “need immediate help”.

Two French associations, the Red Cross and the Secours populaire, have launched an appeal for donations in France. But for the moment, the mobilization does not seem to have worked so well. The Secours populaire tells us that they received online between Sunday and Wednesday only 804 euros, from 13 donors. "In terms of collections, it's nothing at all," laments Corinne Makowski, the national secretary of the association.

Without waiting, a delegation of four members of the Secours populaire will be on site this Friday, taking in particular equipment provided by companies. "The material and psychological consequences for the survivors are enormous", insists Corinne Makowski. The association has already released 50 euros from its emergency fund, while the UN has helped bring one million dollars.
