Saint Martin, land for post-disaster scientific research

About twenty scientists from multiple disciplines (risk geography, spatial analysis, geomorphology, political science, scientific mediation, atmospheric physics, modeling, climatology) are interested in the post-cyclone situation of the northern islands. Their work, which can be consulted over time via the publication of scientific articles, is intended to complement each other and is part of a larger project, entitled TIREX “Transfer of learning from feedback from scientific experience to strengthen the capacities of individual and collective response and adaptation in a context of climate change (Lesser Antilles - cyclone season 2017) ”, led by Frédéric Leone, deputy director of the UMR GRED.

TIREX is one of the four projects selected by the ANR (National Research Agency) following the 2018 edition of the “Hurricanes” call which followed the extreme weather episodes of August and September 2017 in the Lesser Antilles and the Gulf of Mexico. The aid allocated by the ANR to the TIREX project for three years amounts to € 517. Three years during which the various researchers will have to return regularly to the field.

The objective is to complete the impact analysis and strengthen the monitoring of territorial reconstruction, by promoting comparative analysis between territories in the North Antilles, and by formalizing methods for continuous scientific experience feedback. The ambition of TIREX is to participate in the improvement of the cyclonic warning, to identify the inherited vulnerability factors, to reinforce the capacities of adaptation and response of territories and societies in a context of climate change.
