Single-use plastic: the Sint Maarten Nature Foundation visited the carnival village

0

The Sint Maarten Nature Foundation carried out a field survey on Tuesday, April 23 in the carnival village on the Dutch side to verify the use of single-use plastic.

Result: while a few stands use certain biodegradable containers, none have entirely banned single-use plastic. “All the booths serve drinks and food in single-use plastic containers, such as styrofoam boxes and plastic cups. And all of them offer plastic straws. A few still have biodegradable alternatives, but none have been found without single-use plastic, ”reports the Sint Maarten Nature Foundation, which at least hoped to find one. She said she was delighted, however, that some stalls served some of the food and drink in biodegradable containers, and was pleasantly surprised that a few encouraged their customers to use reusable cups. The Sint Maarten Nature Foundation recommends the use of reusable cups for parties and festivals, considering that this reduces “the already enormous amount of waste produced during carnival”. She advises participants to bring their own and congratulates the stands that have decided to use some biodegradable products, hoping to find more next year. She also conducted an awareness campaign among the people who run the stands.
