A dozen of the approximately 80 arrests of suspected looters in Saint-Martin, gave rise to immediate appearances before the Correctional Court of Pointe-à-Pitre. Six individuals are already behind bars…

Among them, a man in his thirties was indicted for concealment in an organized gang and aggravated theft in Saint-Martin after the passage of Hurricane Irma, according to the parquet floor of Basse-Terre.

He is a 28-year-old Haitian. The alleged pillager was transferred to Martinique to be incarcerated at the Basse-Terre prison.

As a reminder, the individual was arrested last Friday by the gendarmes of the Research Section of Saint-Martin after an investigation which led them to several apartments in a residence where his booty was hidden, estimated at several tens of thousands of euros.

Inside were nearly 40 cubic meters of goods stolen from several businesses, said the prosecutor of the Republic of Basse-Terre, Samuel Finielz. The police found "hi-fi equipment, household appliances still packed, a fairly large number of fans, clothes, a number of sports clothes that had been stolen," details the magistrate.

The alleged looter was seen several times during the hurricane and soon after, aboard his large 4 × 4 through the devastated streets of the island. He would also have recruited several teams to help him get hold of the merchandise.

It should be noted that other arrests took place at the start of the week, notably in Quartier d'Orléans where stolen equipment was found.
