MICRO-SIDEWALK: Euro/dollar special

0

“On Tuesday, July 12, 2022,  fell to the same value as the US dollar. A threshold that had not been reached since the year of the introduction of the European currency 20 years ago. Since then, the two currencies have always flirted around equality. As a consumer in a territory where both currencies are used, have you noticed a change in your daily life? »

“Not really, if your question is about using either, I've always used more dollars than euros to pay cash. I work in the hotel industry and I have a lot of American clients, they leave tips in cash and therefore in dollars. I don't know if the fall of the euro is responsible for the increase in the prices of consumer products, but that, on the other hand, we have all noticed the difference. The cost of living has become very expensive. There was a time when we went to the Dutch side to do some shopping and save a little, then it was the opposite. Now it's the same thing, everything is expensive, so paying in one currency or another makes no difference to me. »   Camilla

“Oh yes, and not because prices have skyrocketed but because in many establishments on the French side, they still convert when the euro was worth $1,3 or $1,4, which is outrageous and illegal. Life is expensive, everyone is a victim of inflation and not respecting the current exchange rate, while it's been a while now that the euro and the dollar are more or less equal, it's unacceptable. Fortunately, there are fewer than in July and August, but I avoid going to stores that don't sell $1 = €1. »   Peter

“Being married to an American, I can tell you that they felt the change! Americans rushed to metropolitan France when the euro had the same value as the dollar to buy luxury goods mainly, to do good business. Here, I often have comments from members of my family or American friends who tell me that they find the prices low, of course. For us, it's different, it's rather the opposite effect when we compare the prices of products in the supermarket on the French side for example, even if on the Dutch side, I have also noticed the increase in certain other products, everything is linked . On a daily basis, I now use both currencies, as if they were the same. »   Charlotte

“No, because I've always used euros rather than dollars. When I want to make a purchase on the Dutch side, I pay by card. I live in Marigot, I work on the French side so I use euros. If I was still working in restaurants, I would probably have more dollars in cash, but that's not the case anymore, so I don't see too much difference. My mom, on the other hand, is using more dollars in cash and she has noticed that there are still a few food stores on the French side that are still doing the conversion from before. There should be more control for that. »    Patrice
