Picture of the day: When birds eat plastic…

0

Natural habitats where many animals live are infested with waste such as single-use plastic bags. Some animals, such as turtles or birds, ingest them thinking it is a food.

A phenomenon that is not uncommon to see as the number of plastic bags are present on the two parts of the island. The plastic bag obstructs the access of food in the throat and the stomach which causes the death of the animal. Plastic can also accumulate over time in the stomach and cause the animal to starve to death. Regularly, birds, turtles, fish or marine mammals are victims and die due to the ingestion of plastics. Indeed, algae cling to plastic bags and give off a smell similar to that of food consumed by different species.

The island's main environmental organization, the Nature Foundation stresses the need to ban single-use plastics and encourages businesses and the general public to reduce the use of this type of packaging and replace it with reusable products and biodegradable. _RM
