CHRONICLE OF AN EDUCATIONAL CASTASTROPHE! (or how to send our students to the wall!)

For ten years, the SE-UNSA has denounced the decisions of the Rectorate concerning Saint-Martin and its virtual abandonment of education since the creation of the Territorial Collectivity: the distance in decision-making in Pointe-à-Pitre, economic and educational, systematic forgetfulness of consultation with Saint-Martin for outings from REP (Collège Soualiga in 2015), for training (non-existent today or impossible with Canopée), for the appointment of Heads of establishments and new teachers according to its linguistic specificities added to aberrant local decisions (construction of a huge media library unused today by our students or construction of a school complex whose design was declared obsolete before its use and already saturated), all of this leads to the current situation with the added bonus of job cuts in the Colleges of the square when Saint Martin should be Helped so that our students benefit from unsaturated classes given the linguistic difficulties encountered by our students of various origins: English, Spanish, Creoles often move the French which is necessary for them to obtain their future diplomas.

Nothing (or so little) is done to allow them access to a language sufficient to achieve a positive test result and failure or abandonment by age group is increasingly important.

The will of the Administration to want to respect a purely economic management of posts which is not really justified in Saint-Martin by a demographic decline (as is the case in Guadeloupe where decisions are taken by the Rectorate without taking into account the peculiarities of Saint-Martin) brings us to the abolition of posts in the Colleges with as a corollary classes whose numbers will increase accentuating the difficulties of understanding of our students and teaching at a reduced price: around thirty students in college is no longer the same !!

We ask that an effort be devoted to Saint-Martin by the Rectorate for classes of 24/25 students to offer quality education and a positive future for the young people of the island, otherwise the failure rate will only increase and they will end up in the street: not everyone will be able to study in France, in Canada or in the United States !!

We are already doing too much childcare for some students who would report to specialized organizations elsewhere because they do not exist on the island: we are happy to learn that BTS are created but why not create specialized establishments for pupils in real difficulties who do not fall within the normal educational framework? This would create much-needed jobs today locally.

The situation is ready to explode and it is not for the Carnival Party!

The SE-UNSA asks the Rector to revise its policy of abolishing posts in Saint-Martin as well as the registration of all establishments on the island in REP or even REP + according to the particular linguistic and social difficulties of its students.

The SE-UNSA supports all the actions that can be decided by the teachers of all the establishments of the island by leaving as usual the freedom to each of its members to participate or not.

The SE-UNSA regularly intervenes with the Rector of the Academy through its Representatives in Pointe-à-Pitre in order to defend the interests of all teachers and establishments of the Academy.

We expect a lot from the Rector in response to the demands of all teachers in their respective unions.

It is the wish of the SE-UNSA otherwise our youth will be sacrificed on the altar of a purely economic management which will have negative consequences on our island with an obvious risk of falling into delinquency for lack of sufficient training to obtain of a possible job!

In Saint-Martin, February 13, 2017.

Representative of SE-UNSA
