On Sunday March 17, a little over 100 people from both parts of the island participated in an exclusive discussion on the # 1 Best Selling Book, “Becoming”, by former First Lady Michelle Obama. The event, organized by the United Women's Book Club and the Young United Women's Book Club, took place at the CCISM in Concordia.

The turnout highlighted the fact that many people in our community are interested in reading, education, and empowering oneself and others. We were delighted to see that the numbers matched our expectations. The public has expressed interest in many more events such as book club events.

A special question and answer segment was conducted in English and French, during which the context of certain passages from the book was analyzed and explained by audience members, based on their individual perceptions. Many morals in history have been voiced by the audience, who have also asked generic questions about how we might apply such morals to improve our community. More specifically, how to encourage our children to believe in their ability to succeed.

In her book, Michelle Obama peels the onion, admitting occasional feelings of self-doubt as well as the fact that she and her husband had to bring in a counselor to work on their marriage. Those in attendance explained how we can overcome our own feelings of self-doubt and fear. The question of why the name Becoming was used has generated a lot of interest.
