The flu virus is indeed present. In recent times, an increase in the number of consultations is observed in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, according to the Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS).
In Saint-Martin, since mid-November, “the number of consultations for influenza is increasing, exceeding the maximum values expected with 158 and 131 cases estimated respectively for weeks 50 and 51. This increase is linked to the consultations of a single doctor and is not seen in the emergency room at Fleming Hospital ”, according to the latest epidemiological bulletin from InVS. In Saint-Barthélemy, consultations for influenza-like illness are close to the maximum expected values.
Prevent disease
"Influenza is a serious public health problem which causes serious illness and death in populations at higher risk", according to the World Health Organization (WHO), recalling that the most effective way to protect themselves from the disease is vaccination. Finally, to prevent transmission, "cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and wash your hands regularly," notes WHO.
