Exceptional rainfall hit Guadeloupe overnight from Friday to Saturday. The human toll is heavy: two people died and a third missing. Three months' worth of rain fell in just 12 hours in places.

The exceptionally intense rainfall that affected Les Abymes, Le Gosier and Pointe-à-Pitre began  Saturday around 1 a.m. The rainfall exceeded 300 mm, a phenomenon greater than that recorded during the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Bad weather that occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday in Guadeloupe left two dead and one missing, the prefecture said in a new report. The two victims, two men aged 50 and 61, were found stuck in their vehicle (in Gosier and Grand Camp); A third person, a 30-year-old young man according to local media, was also missing (Bas du Fort sector), and searches to find him remain unsuccessful at this stage, the administration added in its press release.

A total of 80 firefighters were engaged during Saturday afternoon to assist the victims and carry out reconnaissance.

The situation remained “worrying” around Pointe-à-Pitre until late Saturday afternoon. The prefecture then counted 61 interventions for 35 people rescued.

Saturday evening, traffic returned to normal, with however still some “significant difficulties” in certain sectors, including a risk of landslides in the town of Gosier. The prefecture also expected a restoration of electricity to all homes in the evening. _AF
