25% increase in domestic violence in Saint-Martin in one year

We talk about it more and more but the subject is still taboo, that of intra-family violence. Yet it is a real scourge in Saint-Martin. In 2021, the gendarmes received 291 complaints, or 59 more than in 2020 (+25,4%).

More than 7 out of 10 complaints are filed by women. In 2021, the gendarme services received 210 women victims of domestic violence. This is 34 more than the previous year. It's 4 women a week who denounce the violence they suffer.

Nationwide, 11,7 women out of 1 aged over 000 are affected. 15 adult women out of 13. This is the territory where this scourge is the most serious: in French Guiana, 1 women out of 000 aged over 10,4 are victims of domestic violence, in Seine Saint-Denis 1000 out of 20 and in Guadeloupe 9,2 out of 1000; Guyana, Seine Saint-Denis and Guadeloupe being the three departments where this violence is the most numerous in relation to the population.

Among the 210 female victims, 37 are under the age of 18. Violence against minors within the family home is also very numerous in Saint-Martin. 58 complaints were recorded in 2021, 1,7 times more than in 2020. 37 complaints concerned girls and 21 boys.

Half of the female victims are young, since they are between 18 and 39 years old.
