The speed of circulation of the virus accelerated sharply last week in the Dutch part with 112 new cases detected between August 10 and 16, bringing to 317 the total number of cumulative cases since mid-March, i.e. since the appearance of the 1er case.

The previous week (between August 3 and 9), 47 positive cases had been revealed and 32 the week before (July 26 to August 2). Since August 3, the number of cases has more than doubled, from 150 to 317. The number of PCR tests carried out within the population is also on the rise: 238 were carried out between August 10 and 16 against 205 the week before, 125 between July 26 and August 2. The positivity rate went from 25% to 47% within two weeks.

The health situation worsened from July 22-23. In the last phase of deconfinement at the beginning of June, the authorities of Sint Maarten had 77 cases cumulative for several weeks (on April 25, they had 74). This figure was maintained until the beginning of July. Between July 3 and July 22, 4 new cases were recorded, then 10 others on July 23. The second wave began. On July 31, the number of cumulative cases was 128 (+ 50 in one month).

Partly French, the situation has evolved differently. Unlike the Dutch side, which recorded no case for weeks, the French side has always counted new cases: at the beginning of June (last phase of deconfinement), the health authorities identified 42 cases (April 30, 38), at the beginning of July 44, July 17 46 cases, July 31 53 cases. In July, 9 new cases were recorded in the French part. The increase in the number of cases accelerated from the beginning of August in the French part with the appearance of 53 cases between August 1 and August 14, date of the last health bulletin.

The number of PCR tests carried out within the population was 2 on August 321, including 14 since July 1. This large number can be explained by the setting up at the end of July of a free mobile screening campaign in the neighborhoods. The positivity rate is 138% last week and 31% the week before.

Since July 22 (start of the second wave on the island), 188 people * have been infected partly Dutch and 63 partly French, an increase in the number of people carrying the virus respectively by 232 and 137%

* The latest health bulletin from the French side available when we write the article dated August 14, we have considered the figures for the Dutch side as of August 14. If we take into account the figures on August 16, the number of people infected since July 22 is 236 and the increase of 291%.
