Football: Membership of the Federation of Sint Maarten to FIFA: it gets stuck!

0

Members of the Sint Maarten Football Federation and their lawyers have traveled to Lausanne, Switzerland, to appeal a FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) ruling that the island is ineligible for his membership.

Sint Maarten's appeal was heard before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on April 5. The final decision from the CAS hearing can now take up to 9 months.

SXMFF's initial application for FIFA membership was rejected on the grounds that Sint Maarten is not considered an independent country under the FIFA Constitution.

FIFA has placed Sint Maarten's country status on par with that of Bonaire, whose application for FIFA membership was also denied last year. However, Sint Maarten is considered a country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, different from that of Bonaire.

Therefore, the SXMFF decided to appeal the decision to the CAS. Saint Martin Football Federation president Sudesh Singh, SXMFF official Peter Suwijn and political analyst Julio Romney traveled to Lausanne, Switzerland in early April to defend their case for FIFA membership. The match is not won yet, far from it! _AF
