The death toll from the terrible explosion that took place on Monday August 14 in San Cristóbal, in the south of the Dominican Republic, has risen to 32. Of the 59 injured since the start of the emergency, 12 people remain hospitalized.

The strong explosion shook the commercial area of San Cristóbal, capital of the province of the same name, last Monday around 15:10 p.m. (19:10 GMT). The causes of the explosion followed by a major fire are still under investigation by the public prosecutor, the ministry of defence, the national police and the technical unit of firefighters. Last Friday, the public prosecutor indicated that the origin of the explosion would be in the Vidal Plast company and that the police were interested in several people in the company. Through a press release, Fadulia Rosa Rubio, chief prosecutor of San Cristóbal, announced that she had evidence that "engages the criminal responsibility of those responsible who, through their actions, have caused irreparable damage to the population ". Vidal Plast is registered as a factory dedicated to the recycling and purchase and sale of plastic materials in general. It was located in the facilities of an old market in Calle Padre Ayala, in the city center of the municipality of San Cristóbal. The premises were vacated to make way for the construction of a parking lot. Louis Mussington, president of the Collective, reacted to this tragedy: “It is with horror and consternation that we learned of the tragic event that occurred last Monday in San Cristóbal, in the Dominican Republic. A devastating explosion occurred in the center of a shopping mall, subsequently resulting in a fire. 32 people tragically lost their lives and many injuries are to be counted. The human consequences of this event are heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with the Dominican people in this painful time. This tragic event affects us greatly, knowing that so many Saint-Martinois share deep connections with the Dominican Republic. In my capacity as President of the Collectivity of Saint-Martin, I would like to express, together with all the elected officials and the population of Saint-Martin, our deep sympathy and solidarity. May strength and comfort be with all the victims and their families at this difficult time.” _VX
