The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, called for "coordination between allies" to ensure the return of its nationals and Afghans who worked for the allies.

On Thursday, August 19, the President of the Republic met with his American counterpart, Mr. Joe Biden, on the situation in Afghanistan. He stressed the absolute need to ensure rapid and concrete coordination among allies on the ground, to allow the evacuation of our nationals, the Afghan women and men who worked for the allies, as well as those who are threat. The Head of State stressed to his counterpart the moral responsibility that we have collectively incumbent on the Afghans who need our protection and who share our values. We cannot abandon them. The two presidents agreed to step up their joint action in humanitarian, political and counterterrorism matters in the coming days, in particular within the framework of the G7. It is the absolute urgency and it is a collective responsibility for which the President of the United States has assured the Head of State of his support.

With Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation,  Emmanuel Macron in particular discussed the priority expectations common to the two nations with regard to the Taliban: “the fight against drugs and arms trafficking, break with international terrorist movements, respect for women's rights. ". In a telephone interview lasting more than an hour and a half, the two presidents shared their respective analyzes on the situation in Afghanistan, on the evacuations in progress.  The presidents agreed to coordinate closely in the days and weeks to come, bilaterally as well as within the United Nations Security Council, as within the framework of the G20. Finally, the President of the Republic called for the release of Alexei Navalny, a year after the attempted assassination of which he was the victim, in accordance with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. He also expressed the wish that the Russian parliamentary elections next September be held in accordance with the criteria of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE);
