Environment: Beginning of “Life Mérous” monitoring in Saint-Martin

0

Since last September, the Saint-Martin Nature Reserve has started monitoring "Life Mérous" ...

Each year, the Nature Reserves of Saint-Barthélemy, Petite-Terre in Guadeloupe and Saint-Martin, pool their resources and their teams to carry out the "Reserves Monitoring". This involves determining the state of health of the coral reefs and the meadows of the Reserves by monitoring various indicators.

• “Life Mérous” monitoring

On this occasion, the AGRNSM set up, in parallel, "Life Mérous" monitoring on four of the eight stations planned. The method is to count the number of giant groupers and Nassau groupers on transects.

For the moment, although no grouper is observed along the transects, a few individuals have been observed nearby.

The implementation of LIFE actions should contribute to increasing their presence during future monitoring.

"Life" actions

As a reminder, in Saint-Martin, the actions of the Life BIODIV'OM program focus on two species of grouper, the Giant grouper and the Nassau grouper. These two species are mainly threatened by a lack of regulation in the territories with regard to fishing, the destruction of habitats such as coral reefs or climatic events.
