Often relegated to the bottom of the list, protecting coral reefs is important. In addition is in the French overseas territories which are home to 90% of French biodiversity.

"The economic value of coral reefs overseas is estimated at 1 billion euros," says Nicolas Maslach, director of the National Reserve of Saint Martin. In other words, they make it possible to generate a turnover of one billion euros in the overseas territories with the exception of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon which do not have any.

Blue tourism linked to reefs weighs 280 million and attracts a million people overseas (scuba diving, etc.). Fishing allowed thanks to nursery habitats represents 180 million euros.

In total, 50 people in the French overseas departments and territories live thanks to the coral reefs.

Constituting a protection of the coasts by breaking the force of the swell, it is estimated that the reefs make it possible to save 470 million euros of development of the coasts in the overseas.
