Plastic consumption: several products banned in 2020

Three types of plastic products are now banned since the 1st  January 2020: plates, cups and cotton swabs. The ban on these products was clarified by a decree published last Friday in the Official Journal.

This implementing decree follows the provisions of the Egalim law of October 2018, which decided to abandon these plastic products.

However, during the ongoing review in Parliament of the law against waste and for the circular economy, it was planned that some of the products will be banned in 2021, to be in compliance with European law.

What products will be banned? Subject to the final adoption of this law, three types of plastic products will be banned on January 1, 2020: plates, cups and cotton swabs. For the others (cutlery, straws and mixing sticks for drinks), it will be in 2021.

What is the definition? The decree published on Friday defines precisely what a “single-use plastic product” is, in particular the fact that it is “not designed, created or put on the market to be reused for a use identical to that for which It was conceived". It also specifies certain categories of products.

The calendar : products banned on January 1, 2020 will benefit from a six-month inventory run-off period from this date, provided that they were manufactured or imported before.

The exemption granted to compostable products containing at least 50% biobased material is limited to July 3, 2021, according to the decree.

The covers used in penitentiary establishments, health establishments and in air, rail and maritime transport benefit from a period until July 3, 2021.
