Environment / Saint-Martin: Plastic bags are resisting in many businesses!

0

Since January 1, 2017, ultrafine single-use plastic bags used in the fruit and vegetable departments are prohibited on markets, at the grocery store, in supermarkets, as well as in Chinese convenience stores!

This is one of the many changes of the new year. Since January 1, 2017, the law prohibits the distribution, sale, and making available of non-reusable plastic bags in shops.

Only recyclable bags and shopping bags or paper pockets are now authorized.

The application of this measure, provided for in the energy transition law of August 2015, was scheduled for January 1, 2016 but had been postponed by the government to give traders time to prepare for the transition.

However, in Saint-Martin, it seems that this transition has not been taken advantage of by a large number of local merchants who still offer their customers plastic bags that do not comply with the law…

Chinese convenience stores and local food stores are in the sights!

What about sanctions?

This ban responds to the government's desire to do away with an object that only serves the consumer about twenty minutes and that takes between 1 and 4 centuries to degrade. According to the Ministry of Ecology, 17 billion plastic bags are still used each year in France.

Administrative sanctions and / or penal sanctions are provided for by the Environment Code in the event of an offense which may go up to two years' imprisonment and a fine of 100.000 euros.

A sanction which should be dissuasive for offenders who are resistant to the law which also applies to ... Saint-Martin! _AF
