Poisoning of dogs: €7 including €500 suspended sentence required

After several weeks of investigation, DC, a 39-year-old Saint-Martinois living in Martinique, was identified by the gendarmes as the person who poisoned around fifteen animals on the night of September 16 to 17, 2021 in Cul-de- Sac, Grand Case and Anse Marcel. He was presented on Wednesday before the local court of Saint-Martin in immediate appearance. Summoned in their capacity as victims, the owners of the dead dogs were also present.

“But it is not in the name of suffering that one can condemn someone without evidence against him”, indicated master Eddy Arneton, the council of DC. Throughout the hearing, counsel kept repeating that his client was never formally identified by the victims and that the descriptions given by the victims did not match his client. In addition, no poison was found in his home.

The investigation quickly turned to a white pick-up cited by witnesses and visible on CCTV images. It belongs to EL who lends it to DC who admits having driven it on September 16, 2021 to go with his girlfriend to recover an object at Cul-de-Sac.

After several hours of investigation, the prosecutor believes that DC participated in “the wave of poisonings”. He requested a fine of 7 euros, including 500 with a simple suspended sentence. Judgment was reserved for March 3.

Several owners have instituted civil proceedings, as have the SPA and the 30 Millions d'amis foundation. In total, some 20 euros are requested by the victims for material damage (veterinarian costs) and moral. Some as well as the SPA have called for DC to be banned from raising and having animals.
