EDUCATION: New drop in enrollment in public schools in Saint-Martin

For the tenth consecutive year, the number of students attending public establishments in the French part is down. This year, 156 less welcome students. In total, they are 7 038 to have joined the benches of the schools without counting the 75 students in BTS.

This year the decline in enrollment concerns more colleges and high schools with 126 fewer students, primary schools have lost 32 students. Last year, they had registered 136 fewer registrations and secondary schools 95 more compared to the start of the 2019 school year.

The numbers are almost similar in the first level (49,6% of the number) and the second level (49,4%) with respectively 3 and 562 students. The nursery level has 3 fewer children (ie 477 children), the elementary level 9 fewer students (ie 1), the lower secondary schools 240 and the numbers of the upper secondary school are similar to last year.

This downward trend observed since 2012 was accentuated after the passage of Irma. At the start of the 2017 school year, the number of children received fell then increased in 2018 but remained at a level well below that of 2016; in two years enrollment had fallen by 15,4% (minus 1 pupils), for the first time falling below the 342 pupil mark.
