Decreed by the President of the Republic François Hollande, in the aftermath of the attacks of last January, the first day of secularism at school is celebrated today in France, and also in Saint-Martin.

On this occasion, the Minister of National Education Najat Vallaud-Belkacem will go to Matisse College, in the twentieth arrondissement of Paris. She will then attend a conference at the BNF on the theme "History, transmission and pedagogy of secularism", in the presence of Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve. During this day, the organization of educational activities is free. Among the initiatives in our territory, the Lycée des Iles du Nord invited its educational community to wear a blue, white or red T-shirt. “This operation is carried out by the student members of the school life committee who appeal to all the students of the territory to adopt this dress code: blue, white or red.”

What is secularism?

According to the Interior Ministry, “secularism is not an opinion, but the principle that authorizes them all. It guarantees all citizens to live together in freedom of conscience and the freedom to practice a religion or to practice none. France is a secular republic whose values are respect, dialogue and mutual tolerance. ”
