Education: Finally bilingual CP classes

0

Since September 2016, the national education system has experimented with bilingual education in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, starting with a few middle section and 6th grade classes. This year is the first time that this device has been applied in CP. In addition to a class at Hervé Williams, there are three bilingual CP classes in Saint-Martin (Aline Hanson, Omer Arrondel, Clair Saint-Maximin) and two in Saint-Barthélemy.

Bilingual classes open as students progress to the next level. Those in CP today started with the start of the device in the middle kindergarten section. Next year, the system will continue with them in CE1. Four middle section classes, and four large section classes are bilingual in Saint-Martin, and one in each of these levels in Saint-Barthélemy. In all, at the first level, there are 303 pupils schooled in 15 bilingual classes.

They also exist at the second level, from the 6th to the 4th at the colleges of Quartier d'Orléans and Gustavia. The ambition of this use of the two languages (French and English) as vehicles of instruction, is to give the pupils the opportunity to acquire a perfect command of these two languages equally. Until then, the various attempts had failed, such as the bilingual class at the UNESCO-labeled school of Sandy Ground. The main difficulty for the sustainability of this system is the lack of English-speaking teachers. It is therefore thanks to the possibility of recruiting contract workers that bilingual education can develop.
