Hurricane Irma devastated everything in its path, including schools on the Island of Saint Martin. The objective: a resumption of lessons in normal conditions on the island "at the start of the All Saints classes".

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Wednesday that he would be making the trip for this somewhat special start of the school year.

Until then, "schoolchildren can already be welcomed in a certain number of establishments in an obviously provisional manner from September 25," he said in a statement at the end of an interministerial committee for the reconstruction of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy.

95% of island buildings affected

The head of government also reported on the situation in Saint Martin, of which "178 people" are still "in emergency accommodation", saying that the "BPC Tonnerre (which is due to arrive in Saint Martin on Sunday) will allow 'provide solutions of an unprecedented scale for this emergency accommodation'.

He said that 95% of the buildings on the island of Saint-Martin were affected, including 50% of "heavy damage but deemed repairable" and 25% of damage considered "irremediable".

"Work" is already "engaged where the building is recoverable," assured the Prime Minister.

But "the urgency is in some ways behind us", he estimated, insisting on "long-term work, reconstruction, rebirth" but warning that "everyone must take responsibility, we can not consider identical reconstruction ”.

Edouard Philippe also mainly announced for Saint-Martin the freezing of social debts and contentious procedures until December 31, 2017, as well as the postponement until October 15 of the declarations of claims caused by the passage of cyclones Irma and José. And the Public Investment Bank (BPI) will undertake to guarantee the loans granted by entrepreneurs who would like to reinvest for the construction of the island, said the head of government.
