Jean Michel Blanquer has just unveiled a progressive calendar for the return to school from May 11.

“On May 11, we will not have all the students who will resume class, as if we were resuming things normally,” said Jean-Michel Blanquer this Tuesday, April 21, at the National Assembly. “It is even the reverse, an original method with a very gradual return to school”. Although the announcements remain to be confirmed, the Minister ofEducations Nationale has nonetheless unveiled a progressive calendar for schoolchildren, middle school and high school students, in order to avoid the risk of dropping out of school. Students will therefore be able to do their Back to School from May 11 'for classes in large sections, CP and CM2 ″, from May 18 for middle and high school students. Finally, all classes will return to school from Monday 25 May. The Minister therefore favors a new school year by age and in small groups: the number of students should not exceed 15 children per class at most.

Back-to-school schedule from May 11

From Monday May 11 : a pre-start is planned for the teachers and it is first of all “the classes of large sections, of CP and CM2” which will return to school. “We would leave room for flexibility locally” declared the Minister of Education, who specified that certain schools in REP and REP + zones (CP and CE1 classes in particular) as well as classes in rural areas could open as a priority, since classes are already split with less than 15 children.

From Monday, May 18, it is college and high school students who could return to class: 6th and 3rd year classes, 1st and Terminal classes, as well as industrial workshops in vocational high schools.

From Monday, May 25, “All classes could enter,” specifies Jean-Michel Blanquer, but it will nevertheless be necessary to respect social distancing measures with small groups of 15 students per class at most.

A pre-start on May 11 for teachers

In order to best prepare the return of French students to school, a pre-start is scheduled for teachers on May 11. “It is obvious that May 11, it will not be a recovery (…) It can only be the beginning of a slow and long process. There will no doubt be a signal that will be sent, but if the communities do not decide to deconfining their agents that on the 11th, this already means a delay of one week for the resumption of classes, ”explained in Les Echos Philippe Vincent, general secretary of SNPDEN, the union of school leaders.

Back to school according to the age of the children and in small groups

Separate students from the same class. The Minister of Education had already mentioned the idea of separating students within the same class. “Part of the students who will be there in the morning, and the other in the afternoon” may be a solution considered by the government to allow the distancing measures to be respected. During a press point on April 19, Edouard Philippe also addressed this hypothesis, but with students who would alternate every other week.

Flexible schedules. Also, to avoid having overcrowded classes, “it is possible that we have a lower hourly load for the students. We can very well imagine small groups at certain times of the day and the rest takes place at a distance, especially for older students ”declared the Minister.

According to the age of the children. “The question arises in different terms depending on the age of the children”, also specifies Jean-Michel Blanquer. “The only answer for the little ones is obviously small groups and that is what we will not go to. (…) Depending on the age, we will organize ourselves differently ”.

Small groups: less than 15 students. The minister said that the classes should not exceed a maximum of 15 students. This has been the case since the start of the containment for students accommodated in schools and whose parents work in hospitals. “It is in particular this ability to accommodate in small groups, in a differentiated manner, which is one of the keys to respecting barrier gestures” declared Jean-Michel Blanquer. Also, to allow students to respect social distancing, the Minister is in favor of the organization of activities. “I think it is desirable to maintain extracurricular activities. This would allow the school to be relieved by creating small groups of students ”explained Jean-Michel Blanquer. In particular, there could be sports activities “corresponding to health regulations” for the pupils.

The Fathers and Mothers revolt: Back to school on May 11, it's too early, I won't send my child to class, I don't want him to catch the virus at school .
Let's imagine that the start of the school year is logically postponed to September, except for the final and Baccalaureate classes, arrive at the end of May, June, July, ... will the children be confined inside the house, or the parents will allow them to go and play with the neighbor, with his football friends, or the cousin if the parents are visiting?
The solution is not obvious, but the return to school in September seems to be the solution to put an end to the controversies.
