CULTURE / EDUCATION: Young and old braved the weather to receive their coloring book

As previously announced, the association Les Fruits de Mer has published a new coloring book entitled Soualiga Island. In this vein, a distribution of free copies took place last Saturday, November 5 at the Amuseum Naturalis and despite the threatening sky, the public responded.

Signed by Jenn Yerkes and illustrated by Paulina Hernàndez, the Soualiga Island coloring book joins the beautiful collection of works published by the association which collects and shares its knowledge of nature and the heritage of Saint-Martin. Original characteristic for this work, the use of four languages for each animal name: French, English, Spanish and Dutch. Jenn Yerkes explains to us that she had the will to opt for multilingualism after noticing that in a neighborhood like Quartier d'Orléans, 85% of people speak English, 10% Spanish and only 5% French. She therefore wanted Soualiga Island, which is particularly aimed at kindergarten children, to offer four common languages on the territory. This not only allows children to become multilingual in an educational and fun way, but also parents or relatives whose mother tongue is neither French nor English to share the experience of discovery and learning with them. . The idea of creating this book which presents animals that live in Saint-Martin with a drawing to color and the name of the animal to write was born at the beginning of this year 2022. A second edition devoted to sea animals is already in preparation and will be available by the end of November, or even the beginning of December. This Saturday morning, many children and adults went to the Amuseum Naturalis in Quartier d'Orléans, a free museum located in the "Old House" and created by the association Les Fruits de Mer. Some even visited the last exhibitions when the most impatient to browse the Soualiga Island coloring book settled at a table where pastels were at their disposal, leaving room for their creativity. _VX
