Sargassum crisis: Nicolas Hulot and Annick Girardin announce a series of emergency measures

On an official visit to Guadeloupe, Nicolas Hulot and Annick Girardin have just announced a series of measures to set up the pickup in less than 48 hours.

For the past 4 months, the Antilles have faced regular strandings of sargassum, the proliferation of which leads to health risks and economic damage to residents, socio-professional players and communities.

On an official visit to Guadeloupe Sunday, June 10 and Monday, June 11, Nicolas Hulot, Minister of Ecological and Solidarity Transition and Annick Girardin, Minister of Overseas announced, after meeting with elected officials and residents, a series of measures to deal with this exceptional location. These measures for Guadeloupe, the Northern Islands, Martinique and Guyana, will be financed to the tune of 10 million euros by the State, and will make it possible to support the investments and the collection operations of the local authorities concerned.

The announcements of the two ministers are structured around 4 objectives:

• Speed ​​up the establishment of the stranding monitoring and forecasting network, as well as the sanitary network for monitoring gas emissions linked to the decomposition of algae and potential health risks.

• Set up with all the communities affected by the sargassum collection solutions allowing intervention in less than 48 hours to avoid the decomposition of algae.

• Strengthen research and innovation as well as regional and international cooperation to provide answers on the question of the origin of algae as well as to assess the good practices implemented by our main partners.

• Support citizens and companies affected by sargassum to limit economic losses, in conjunction with insurers who may now propose to include sargassum risk in insurance contracts.

These elements will feed a Sargassum plan to allow the Antilles to prepare in the same way as we prepare for the cyclonic season, it is necessary to prepare for Sargassum seasons with a series of measures to be implemented quickly, at regional, departmental, and local level.
