Coronavirus: Soon isolation reduced to 7 days

The period of quarantine in the event of contamination with Covid-19 could go from 14 to 7 days, according to the Minister of Health Olivier Véran. The scientific council is in favor.

"Test, trace, isolate". Isolation is a central axis of health policy to fight the Covid 19 epidemic. The government insists on it: you must isolate yourself at the slightest symptom, in case of doubt after a risk situation (friendly or family meeting ... ) and also when one has been identified as a contact case by the teams of the ARS (Regional Health Agencies) and the Health Insurance.

The fourteen-day period defined for isolation  corresponds to the period during which the person is potentially contagious. This change in strategy, while all the indicators show an increasingly active circulation of the virus on French territory, may therefore be surprising.

"We must take into account the principle of reality", justifies the minister: a large number of French people do not respect this fourteen. Reducing its duration will, he hopes, make it better respected and generate “better adherence”.

Even if the duration of contagiousness is not definitively decided, the latest studies confirm that the five days following the onset of symptoms or a positive test constitute the period most at risk of contagion. “Then this contagiousness decreases very significantly. Beyond a week it remains but it is very weak, underlined Olivier Véran.

After the Defense Council scheduled for Friday, the experts will have to specify the conditions under which the isolation period can be reduced.
