Commemoration of November 11: A solemn and emotional ceremony

November 11, 1919 marked the first anniversary of the end of the fighting in the First World War. One hundred years later, November 11 is still synonymous with the commemoration of the signing of the armistice that ended four years of war and fighting. Saint-Martin paid its tribute to this war, so a tribute was paid to the Poilus saint-martinois and the dead for France, in front of the monument to the dead located in the gardens of the Collectivité.

November 11 is also the day of Saint-Martin, celebrated on both sides of the "border", the ceremony of commemoration of the armistice of the war of 14-18 took place on Sunday 10 in the presence, in particular, of the prefect Sylvie Feucher, of the deputy Claire Guion-Firmin, of the territorial adviser Pascale Alix-Laborde, of the veterans of Saint-Martin and representatives of the various services of the State.

The prefect read the message from Geneviève Darrieussecq, Secretary of State to the Minister of the Armed Forces, on the National Day of Commemoration of Victory and Peace, but also to soldiers who died for France in external operations. November 11 is also an opportunity to honor “all the daughters and sons of France who, in all conflicts, yesterday and today, have fulfilled their duty until the supreme gift (…) By inaugurating a national monument in their memory, the President of the Republic inscribed in stone, as in memories, the full and entire recognition of an entire people for their fighters, "according to the Secretary of State. After the traditional laying of wreaths, the prefect Sylvie Feucher proceeded to the presentation of the medal of honor for acts of courage and devotion, bronze echelon to ten people, as well as two bronze medals for internal security to two gendarmes.

During this ceremony, students from the Alphonse de Lamartine primary school also participated, singing the Marseillaise and then the Creole Hymn._RM
