The national education services must each end of the school year plan what will be the numbers for the next school year, in particular to know how many teaching positions will be needed. In 2017-2018, the actual workforce was well below forecasts following the passage of Irma and the thousands of departures from the island that followed it. After Irma, on November 6, 2017, only 65% of the workforce planned for the 2017-2018 school year were present, then 85% in January.
One of the difficulties of this 2018-2019 school year was to anticipate the return or not of the students who left the island. Two out of sixteen schools could not reopen, too damaged by the hurricane, and Saint-Martin also has one less college, which had to merge with the school city. In total, the French part therefore has fourteen nursery and elementary schools, three colleges, a general and technological high school and a vocational high school.
As of September 24, 2018, public schools in Saint-Martin had 7351 students. If the enrollments in the second degree are in line with those forecast by the education services, those in the first degree were less expected. They are 216 more students than expected in primary and kindergarten.
At the end of last September, there were therefore 3722 students enrolled in public primary schools, or 83,1% of the number of students expected at the start of the 2017-2018 school year. In public secondary schools, there were 3566 students 63 students in BTS at the end of September 2018. That is 88,3% of the pupils of pupils present at the start of the 2018 school year compared to the number of pupils expected at the start of the 2017 school year.
