A ceremony of homage to the gendarmes who died in service took place last Friday at the Saverne Barracks. Soldiers who died in the line of duty were honored.

As every year on February 16, civil, judicial, military, gendarmes and citizens gathered to honor the memory of the gendarmes who died in the performance of their duties last year and in early 2018.

A ceremony chaired by the prefect, Anne Laubiès, the squadron chief Jean Hildenbrand, commander of the 13/5 mobile gendarmerie squadron from Sathonay-Camp (69) moved to Saint-Martin and the vice president of the Collectivity, Yawo Nyuidzi.

Last year, no less than eight gendarmes died while exercising their duty, their names were Jean-François, Frédéric, Bernard, Nathan or even Eric. Four other gendarmes have also lost their lives since the start of 2018.

Before the wreath laying and the minute of silence, the Prefect read the message from the Minister of the Interior, Gérard Collomb. He addressed the gendarmes and paid tribute to the deceased personnel in these terms: "These are eight children of the Republic who, like each and every one of you, had made the choice to risk their lives to defend that of the French and the French."

Earlier in the morning, a delegation of soldiers from the company, accompanied by the flag and a member and representatives of associations of veterans and victims of Saint Martin's war, moved to the cemetery of Marigot to gather on the tombs of the ancestors of the Maréchaussée who died on the territory of the island of Saint-Martin (Gendarme on horseback MARIOT, died in 1868 at the age of 37) - Gendarme on horseback MICHAUD, died in 1881 at the age of 30 - Gendarme on horseback PROJEAN, date of death unknown). _AF
