BIODIVERSITY: Installation of panels to raise public awareness of the protection of groupers in Saint-Martin

The European Life BIODIV'OM program aims to protect biodiversity in five overseas territories, including Saint-Martin, and to increase the populations of 5 threatened species (the Crab beetle in Reunion, the Crabier blanc in Mayotte, the White-throated Thrasher in Martinique, Giant Grouper in Guyana and Saint-Martin and Nassau Grouper in Saint-Martin).

To this end, local actors are implementing actions to protect the feeding and breeding sites used by these species, to manage invasive alien plant and animal species and to deepen knowledge of these species and their habitats.

In Saint-Martin, “Les Yeux des Mérous” is a participatory system set up by the Saint-Martin Nature Reserve Management Association (AGRNSM) as part of the European LIFE BIODIV'OM project. This participative network of observers allows the various actors such as divers, fishermen or swimmers to transmit their observations of grouper, the objective being to promote the accumulation of data while raising awareness among the various audiences.

In April and May, the Association for the Management of the National Nature Reserve of Saint-Martin installed three information panels at three strategic sites: Tintamarre islet, at the Fort Louis marina and at the Anse Marcel.
