AGRICULTURE: “From reproduction to quality”

0

In 2011, Emmanuel Gimenez, breeder and founder of the Carib Genes project, returned to his island of Saint-Martin and took over the family farm, his great-uncle no longer being able to work there. Gradually he restored the property which currently has around fifty animals.

According to Emmanuel Gimenez, it is above all necessary to manage the problem of reproduction in order to be able to move forward and really produce high quality. As a result, he is thinking about his own project. He follows a training course, obtains his diploma with a health approval for a bovine semen storage center to turn to artificial insemination. Artificial insemination is “genetic progress” which makes it possible to reduce the environmental impact of breeding: breeders use fewer animals for the same result.

However, it has not yet started for a simple reason: the lack of structuring of the beef industry. The upcoming reopening of the slaughterhouse gives hope to Emmanuel who has not reduced his livestock.

Soon, he will be able to start artificial insemination on his animals. Thus nine and a half months later, the first calf births will see the light of day on the territory.

Emmanuel is betting on his Carib Genes project and hopes that it will be the essential tool for other breeders.

Finally, last June he passed a diploma in order to use the principle of insemination with goats. It is also in the process of obtaining the AB label. He will be the first to be certified Organic Agriculture in early 2023 for all of his breeding.
