Abolition of slavery: commemorative ceremony at Agrément

0

The commemoration of the abolition of slavery took place last Friday at the Agrément roundabout, in the presence of many personalities.

Like every year, the ceremony was punctuated by various activities appreciated by the population. As tradition dictates, wreaths were laid in front of the Lady Liberty statue by the president of the Collectivity Aline Hanson, Senator Guillaume Arnell and the representative of Prefect Emmanuel Effantin.

The president clarified that May 28, 1848 is indeed the official date of the proclamation of the abolition of slavery in Saint-Martin, according to historical research carried out by Daniella Jeffry. The senator and the chair recalled that modern slavery still exists around the world. _EH
