4G: why is one operator better than another?

0

Arcep publishes the performance of mobile operators in Saint Martin; these are the results of a survey carried out with the assistance of said operators. We see that some are more efficient than others. For what reasons ? The first is the level of frequency assigned by Arcep regardless of the quality of the equipment installed. Indeed, not all operators have the same 4G frequency or the same position in a band. Explanations.

4G frequency allocation

The frequencies (800 MHz and 2 MHz) were allocated in 600 by Arcep (Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts) to the Antilles-Guyana. Five operators had applied: Dauphin Telecom, Digicel, Free, Orange and UTS Caribbean.

According to the satisfaction of different criteria, Arcep gave ratings. These made it possible to draw up a classification from which the allocation order is defined.

The scores out of 100 attributed to operators vary from 23 for UTS Caribbean to 72 for Orange. As the regulations provide, only the first four candidates are selected, so that no 4G frequency has been allocated to UTS Caribbean (see our article yesterday) which therefore only offers 3G.

In the 800 MHz bands, 30 MHz of frequencies were available; they were awarded to the first three winners, Orange, Free and Digicel. Dauphin Telecom therefore could not benefit from 800 MHz frequencies which provide better coverage of the territory with fewer antennas unlike the other 3.

In the 2,6 GHz bands, 70 MHz were available: Orange and Dauphin each obtained 20 and Free and Digicel 15 each.

To date, only Orange, Digicel and Dauphin Telecom offer 4G in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy; Free, although having frequencies in addition  800MHz, has not yet taken root.
