Local life: A temporary complex made available to restaurateurs and shops on the Marigot waterfront!

1

Heavily damaged by Hurricane Irma, the public building housing 14 traditional restaurants and souvenir shops on the Marigot Waterfront will soon be destroyed to be entirely rebuilt, as part of the new development of the Marigot Seafront carried by President Gibbs and his teams, the first phase of which will begin in 2020.

In order to allow the operators of this structure to continue their activity during the works period, the Collectivity took the decision to build a temporary complex made up of 22 fitted containers, on the Seafront, in line with the food market.

These equipped containers, each 14m2, benefit from all the necessary connections (water - electricity, etc.). They are built on foundations of 1m and can withstand winds of 50km / h, according to estimates by the control company. Each restaurant has a 210m40 terrace which can be fitted out with its own furniture and kitchen equipment. The platform includes 2 containers distributed in 18 restaurants, 14 bars, public toilets, all installed on a large wooden deck open on the seafront. In addition, the Collectivity has installed 5 shops and a control office.

The community chose a neutral color for the containers, gray and wood. Operators will be able to start their installation in October and will be able to choose the color of their furniture (tables, chairs and parasols) to give color.

For Isabelle Gorizia, Director of the Community Engineering Pole, "even if these are temporary structures, the Community wanted to make an exemplary and sustainable construction".

"This platform was built in compliance with the building standards in force, with the use of innovative materials (public lighting - all aluminum construction)".

It was a wish of President Daniel Gibbs and his vice-president Steven Patrick, who wanted the operators, who waited two long years, to be able to work in a pleasant, functional environment and in compliance with current standards.

The demolition and reconstruction of the original building will take several months (asbestos control - demolition - reconstruction), and it was

essential for the Community that the operators can work in good conditions during the duration of this work.

The opening of this new tourist “village” is scheduled for November 2019.

Both Saint-Martinois and visitors will have at their disposal a particularly well-stocked market, composed of traditional restaurants, bars, shops, and in the extension of this new complex, a food market (meat, fish, fruit and vegetables ) and the craft market on the other side.

The construction of these containers equipped and decorated with wooden cladding, was carried out to high pressure standards by the service provider Mobile Construction, on a design drawn by Architectural Studio. The overall cost of this public contract was € 972.

The Collectivity also programmed the deck beautification, with green plants, before the start of the new tourist season.

A bit expensive for projectiles propelled by winds above 210 km / h as those of IRMA were.
Fortunately, this expenditure of € 972 includes I hope their dismantling since they are only temporary premises which may not kill anyone after all ..?
