Expensive life, reconstruction, inaction of the Community: Sandy-Ground is mobilizing and blocking the neighborhood!

On the evening of December 18, residents of Sandy-Ground blocked the road at the bridge to express their dissatisfaction with the slowness of the conditions for post-Irma reconstruction.

Yesterday morning, the movement continued in order to protest against the expensive life, the very difficult living conditions of the inhabitants of the district and the inaction of the Collectivity with regard to them within the framework of the reconstruction of the post Irma.

Jérémy, president of the Madtwoz association, explains the reasons for the mobilization: "We are very determined because a lot of problems remain since Irma: we do not see the money for reconstruction, many inhabitants still live in disaster-stricken houses , elderly people who live alone still have no water at home, it took 18 months for the basketball court to be cleared, the youth are left behind and ignored… Too much is too much and we wish finally be listened to and define our own agenda for the development of our neighborhood ”.

Albert, president of a football association at Sandy-Ground, deplores "a lack of social justice" and "the fact that young people are not given alternatives other than hanging out on the street".

He regrets "that there is no adequate football field at Sandy-Ground" which forces young people to "wander to Marigot or elsewhere to play football". He recalls that the construction of the basketball court "is the result of a long battle with the community" and that "it is time to think about the local population in order to help them live with dignity because there is too much poverty and not enough actions from the Collectivity to help us ”.

In the middle of the morning, Cédrick ANDRÉ, representative of the Sandy-Ground district, went to the sub-prefecture to express the residents' demands to the authorities.

Note that the Sandy-Ground road was reopened to traffic yesterday, early in the afternoon.
