A € 30 million project to improve waste treatment

All the waste collected in the French part is transported to the Ecosite in Grandes Cayes to be treated according to its nature.

For example, green waste is turned into compost, glass bottles into green sand, etc. Household waste is buried. So-called ultimate waste because it cannot be recycled, is also buried in cells. However, these reach saturation point; a little earlier than expected due to the large volumes of waste generated by the passage of Irma.

A situation which forced the company Verde SXM, which operates the site, to find solutions to continue processing this waste. "The extension of the site comes up against several obstacles: on an island the spaces available are limited, the Ecosite is surrounded by the Nature Reserve which does not allow its extension and European regulations limit the burial of waste", explains Patrick. Villemin, the president of SXM Verde. In this context and in partnership with the Collectivity, SXM Verde has sought to see how to better stabilize ultimate waste while reducing its environmental impact or even enhancing its energy potential and stabilizing waste. And she found this solution in the so-called PI project.

“The PI system is well suited to an island environment because it does not require large installations that are difficult to amortize. It is modular, robust and adapts to variations in the volume and composition of the waste to be treated, which Saint-Martin faces due in particular to the tourist season, ”explains Patrick Villemin.

Concretely, the future installation will make it possible to burn the ultimate waste at 350 ° C for three hours. “This is not an incinerator that burns waste at 1 ° C,” explains Patrick Villemin. “The PI process has two stages unlike the incinerator, which has only one: the converter stage which prepares the waste into solid recovered fuels (SRF); the smoldering or oxygen-free gasification phase at low temperature followed by complete oxidation and flameless combustion, ”he explains.
