Tide station: towards improving the alert system

The Interreg Caribbean IV program for the period 2007-2013 made it possible to set up a tide gauge station in Saint-Martin, inaugurated yesterday at the port of Galisbay.

The mission of this installation is “to strengthen the capacities of prevention of the risks of tsunami and marine submersions for the region”, indicated the president of the Community Aline Hanson during the meeting devoted to the Interreg device, specifying that this project is common with Saint-Barthélemy which will have its own station. It was Charlotte Terrac, project manager for “major risks” at the local authority, who presented this project, in the presence in particular of the prefect Anne Laubies and the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten William Marlin. The work of this station is focused on three objectives: “Improved knowledge of risk, operational capacity for real-time forecasting and monitoring to assess and respond to risk, and shared management of alerts and crisis management ”, according to Ms. Terrac. The funding for this station amounts to 100.000 euros, including a Feder grant of 75.000 euros (Interreg). _EH
