ST MAARTEN: For William Marlin, the Netherlands takes the population "hostage"

1

For the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten the Netherlands "have no right to take the population hostage". On October 13, the Minister of the Interior of the Netherlands, Ronald Plasterk, announced to him by telephone that the kingdom was ready to want to contribute financially to the reconstruction of Sint Maarten. But on two conditions.

The first is the establishment of an Integrity Chamber to guarantee sound and transparent management of public affairs. The second is the control of the island's borders by the Royal Military and Border Police and the customs under the authority of the Minister of Justice of Sint Maarten. By imposing these two conditions, the Netherlands wants to ensure that the money that can be released and sent locally is used correctly.

William Marlin does not approve of the conditions or the method and refuses to set up an integrity chamber. Sunday afternoon, after a new call from Ronald Plasterk, he repeated it: "there is no reason not to trust the local authorities, the position of the Netherlands is unjust and unacceptable".

The Netherlands assures that it will not give in on either of the two conditions. Sint Maarten has until October 31 to approve them or not.
