St Maarten begins final week of mass vaccination

Two days of vaccination without an appointment will follow the closure of the vaccination centers at the end of the week.

Sint Maarten's health authorities are encouraging unvaccinated people to go to vaccinodromes on the Dutch side, adding that these centers offering the Pfizer walk-in vaccine will close by the end of the week.

The Belair Community Center is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. The Collective Prevention Service (CPS) at Vineyard Office Park is also open from Tuesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. then from 13:30 p.m. to 16 p.m.

Two final and one-off vaccination operations will be organized on Friday and Saturday at locations and times to be communicated shortly.

On July 26, 55 active cases were identified in the southern part of the island and placed in isolation at their home. No covid patients were hospitalized and the total number of deaths from the epidemic remained at 34. Sint Maarten set a target to achieve vaccination coverage of 85%, or more than 44 people vaccinated. “Nearly 000 people are vaccinated in Sint Maarten (i.e. a vaccination coverage of 24%, editor's note) and are now protected against Covid-000. The Delta variant, twice as contagious as the Alpha, has spread to Sint Maarten (and predominates today in contaminations, editor's note). As this variant causes major problems in many countries, it is important to know that Pfizer vaccine is 46% effective against this variant. It is also obvious because almost all the active cases and hospitalized patients are among the unvaccinated people ”indicate the authorities of Sint Maarten.

Finally, they insist, “while being young and healthy reduces the risk of developing a severe form of the disease, it is never guaranteed. There are several examples of professional athletes and healthy young people who have had to be hospitalized. We also know that 10-20% of people who have had Covid-19 experience long-term sequelae and may have mental health issues, chronic fatigue, lung damage, and loss of taste and smell during months or even years after their recovery ”.

And strongly encourage people over 12 to go to vaccination centers this week. “It is only with a sufficient number of people vaccinated that we will not have to fear a new outbreak of the epidemic and that Sint Maarten can return to normal” concluded the authorities on the Dutch side.
