Sport / Health: Bigorexia, a disease recognized by the WHO

0

Difficult to imagine that sport can become a real health problem as its practice is touted and encouraged by all professionals around the world.

Bigorexia is the name of addiction to sport which has been recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization) since 2011. We have all already felt this feeling of fullness after physical exertion, right? It is the endorphins that are responsible for this sensation. If most people are able to resist the obsession, beyond a certain threshold of practice the risk would be real according to specialists. Impossible to precisely quantify the number of people affected because the disease has been recognized for only a few years and above all, it is completely denied in some circles. There is no reason to panic if you practice in high doses, there are symptoms as with all diseases and not all athletes are affected. On the other hand, professionals as well as amateurs can be reached. What should we watch for to guard against this disease which enters the family of "addictions without substance"?

Here is the joint response from INSEP (national sports institute) and CREPS (sports resource, expertise and performance center) in a practical sheet published for the attention of sports coaches:

A constantly increasing practice with encroachment on personal and / or professional life;

The feeling of not being able to stop the sport.

The appearance of withdrawal signs (distress, depressive symptoms, etc.) in the event of abrupt stopping of the practice.

Ritualization and obsessive repetition of gestures.

Obsessive behavior related to your physical condition, weight or performance.

A complete change in lifestyle;

Careless risk-taking or the desire to always push your limits as if to "erase" unpleasant emotions not related to sport. _NB
