COMPANY: About thirty abandoned dogs on the Belle Créole site

Because people are leaving the island, because people cannot afford to sterilize their animal, because people can no longer afford to feed it, whatever the cause, the consequence is the same, abandonment of the animal. In recent weeks a new place has become very popular: La Belle Créole and the surrounding virgin land.

"In the space of fourteen days, we counted 31 abandoned dogs," reports a resident who is used to walking on the beach daily. “Most of them are four to six week old puppies. At the end of last week, we saw eleven in the area, ”he continues. “But there are also quite a few adult dogs,” he explains.

Saint-Martin does not have a shelter to accommodate abandoned dogs; the structure managed by Ursula Oppikofer in Mont Vernon on land provided by the community was completely destroyed by Irma. For various reasons, it was not reassembled. However, Ursula and other animal lovers continue to come to their aid, trying to find foster families, feeding them, etc.

Recently two new people wishing to open a shelter approached the community to find out about the procedures in the area. They were received by the president's collaborators, who assured them of the support of the COM in this project which must meet a certain number of conditions (health, etc.), to be approved and therefore authorized.

As a reminder, the COM conducts a campaign to capture stray dogs four times a year. The dogs thus collected are placed in a kennel. In partnership with her association, Ursula tries to find new teachers for them; dogs that cannot be adopted are euthanized. (soualigapost.com)
