SINT MAARTEN: Towards legalization of cannabis?

0

This Monday, September 12, the government of Sint Maarten launched a call for tenders for a study concerning the legalization of cannabis in the territory. This call for tenders is aimed at organizations wishing to work with the said government to make cannabis legal, in a responsible, secure and achievable approach.

Each proposal submitted in the application package should have a strong focus on carrying out several studies on the effects of cannabis legalization before concrete decisions can be made on how cannabis will be legalized.

The Minister for Public Health, Social Development and Labor, Omar EC Ottley, would like to invite and welcome any proposals working towards a regulated and legalized cannabis industry.

The objective is to receive proposals from local or international companies that wish to work jointly with the government of Sint Maarten, with a view to establishing a legal cannabis industry in the territory in such a way that a large part of the advantages economic, social and medical services remain local and from which the population of Saint-Martin will benefit directly. Interested organizations are invited to send an email to cannabis@sintmaartengov.org to have the application package sent to them. The official launch of the call for tenders therefore began on Monday, September 12, 2022 for a period of 90 days. All proposals submitted before the deadline of December 5, 2022 will be thoroughly reviewed and evaluated, based on the information provided in the proposal, as well as the list of deliverables to be included, list disclosed in the application file. In France, the question of the legalization of cannabis seems blocked. The law of December 31, 1970 prohibits the production, sale, purchase and use of cannabis, making it one of the most repressive laws on the continent, while 1,5 million people consume cannabis regularly. In a column published on August 10 in "Le Monde", a collective made up of 31 senators from the socialist, environmentalist and republican group undertook to launch a consultation process in order to table a bill to legalize cannabis while opposing its decriminalization. According to the collective, this is a social issue that the public authorities must take up. _VX
