Sint Maarten / Sargasses: a threat to sea turtles

0

In the coming weeks, Sargassum algae will be back in force on the island, announced the Nature Foundation which is concerned about the impact of this phenomenon on sea turtles.

“Removing these algae with heavy loaders carries a risk for nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. The algae itself can also be a danger to animals, ”said the director of the foundation Tadzio Bervoets, adding that many turtles have been suffocated by these algae in Barbados. In Sint Maarten, Guana Bay, Gibbes Bay, Dawn Beach and the Pointe Blanche sector are strongly affected by Sargassum.
