ENVIRONMENT / Sargassum forecast: Saint-Martin at high risk

0

In its monitoring and forecast bulletin for the stranding of pelagic sargassum for the Northern Islands communicated on September 21, 2023, Météo France classifies the level of risk as high for the territory of Saint-Martin and low for Saint-Barthélemy.

Despite cloud cover to the east of the West Indian arc, analysis of satellite images from September 18 to 20, 2023 shows numerous rafts present all around the Northern Islands archipelago. These rafts and filaments are located to the east of Saint-Martin and to the north of Saint-Barthélemy with a dominant easterly sector flow around the islands. They are both already the source of successive arrivals which will continue to affect the east of the island of Saint-Martin. Saint-Barthélemy will experience a slight respite given the lack of algae in the first 10 to 20 kilometers to the east and south. This respite will unfortunately be short-lived, the rafts currently visible between Barbuda and the North Island are a sign of potential arrivals to the east in the coming days. Rotational currents disrupt the circulation of algae in the eastern part of the West Indies. The schools present are not heading directly towards the two islands but they still remain a threat for the weeks to come. _VX
