Sint Maarten (Various facts): More than 600 accidents in 9 months!

The Sint Maarten police have taken stock of traffic accidents that have occurred over the past 9 months. An analysis that made it possible to determine the causes and places where most accidents took place, but also the consequences they had.

Between January 1 and September 30, 2020, the traffic police department recorded more than 600 accidents, which represents around 70 accidents per month. Thus, there are more than two accidents per day, and statistics show that many of the causes are preventable.

The human factor seems to be the most common element in road accidents. This includes both driving behaviors such as distracted driving, excessive speeding, reckless driving, traffic violations, or fatigue and physical disabilities.

While distracted driving is the most common cause of road accidents in part of the Netherlands, speeding and driving under the influence are the reasons for some other major accidents. Using a cell phone and eating or drinking while driving are also causes of accidents. While these causes may vary, the consequences are generally the same, and range from damage to vehicles and property to serious injury.

Speeding, unexpected change of direction, disobeying road signs, are the main signs of reckless driving, according to the police.

The police have established an overview of the areas most exposed to accidents, with the A.TH sector at the top of the ranking. Illidge Road with 59 accidents, Walter JA Nisbet Road with 53 accidents, followed by AJC Brouwers Road, 49, Welfare Road, 47, Sucker Garden Road, 40, Union Road, 39, LB Scot Road, 35, Bush Road, 26, la airport road, 24, and at the end of the ranking Arch Road and CA Cannegieter Road each with 12 accidents.

Police in Sint Maarten would like to again warn road users that many accidents can be avoided if drivers drive not only for themselves, but also for those around them. _AF
